How Invisalign Works

Gapped Teeth

Gapped teeth are one of the most common reasons people seek orthodontic treatment. Gaps commonly occur due to a continued growth of the jawbone or from missing teeth causing surrounding teeth to shift. Without treatment, patients with gapped teeth can develop gum problems such as periodontal pockets and potentially periodontal disease. This is due to the exposure of gum tissue.

An overbite, also known as an “overjet,” refers to upper teeth that bite over lower teeth. This can be caused from bad oral habits, overdevelopment of bone, or genetics. Without treatment, it can cause gum problems such as irritation, damage to the lower teeth, as well as painful joint and jaw problems.

An underbite occurs when the bottom teeth protrude over the top teeth. This can be caused by missing teeth or an overgrowth of either the lower or upper jaw, or both. This can potentially cause problems like a normal function of molars or front teeth. It can also lead to wearing down of your teeth which can cause joint and jaw pain.

Open Bite

An open bite occurs when the front teeth create an open look to them when biting down, preventing the teeth from touching the opposing teeth. This can be caused from genetics, excessive thumb sucking or tongue posture. Without treatment, an open bite can cause poor or painful chewing, as well as speech impairment and painful jaw joint disorders.

Overly Crowded

Overly crowded teeth happen when a jaw does not have enough room for teeth to fit. Without treatment, crowded teeth can actually get worse and become severely crooked. This can lead to excess plaque, tooth decay and increased risk of gum diseases all of which are directly linked to heart disease.

When the upper and lower jaws are misaligned, it is known as a crossbite. This will cause upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth. Without treatment, this can cause wearing down of teeth, potential gum disease as well as bone loss.  Crossbites can be in the front or in the back of your teeth/mouth.
